PIERRE — Peter J. Buchholz, Jr., 71, of Pierre, passed away from cancer on Friday, February 12, 2021, at his home in Pierre surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. CST Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre.
Visitation will be held an hour prior to the funeral mass.

Peter Joseph Buchholz, better known as “Pete” by his family and friends, was born on November 27, 1949, in Stillwater, Okla. His birth parents were unable to care for him at which time he was placed with the sisters of the Catholic Church. He was quickly adopted by Peter and Myrtle Buchholz. They later adopted two more children, Mary and Gregory and settled in Roggen, Colo. The family raised dry land wheat, chickens, peacocks, pigeons for show, and bees for honey. This formed many fond memories for Pete. Pete also helped farm his parents land and enjoyed tending to the family flower garden that contributed to all the arrangements for weekly services at their local Catholic Church. Growing up Pete attended Weld Central High School and later St. Mary’s of the Plains College in Kansas for agriculture.

Pete met Joan Marie McKay and later wed in 1971. That union brought Jeremy Peter and Pamela JoAnn into the world. Pete decided farming was not his business, so he created a farming chemical business in Huron. Pete and Joan later divorced. As life changed, he ultimately moved to Pierre, where he worked in the chemical/seed business but later ventured into car sales. Pete was immensely proud of his work and always wanted to make sure sales were done right or not at all.

In 2018 he was diagnosed with cancer of multiple kinds. He endured many treatments and gave a good battle which he ultimately lost.

Pete is survived by his children, Jeremy (Stacy) Buchholz and Pam (Travis) Ingram; their mother, Joan Buchholz; step-daughter, Jamie (Doug) Anthony; grandchildren, Jenna, Alena, Sage, and Cadin; step-grandchildren, Kyle, Ethan, Alex, Kyron, and Jayla; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Sr. and Myrtle Buchholz.

His family would like to thank the medical team at the Mayo Clinic, the Cancer Center, and Sanford Health in Pierre, the amazing hospice nurses, and Father Ron Garry.

Family and friends will have a memorial poker run at a later date, when it is warm enough to ride Harleys, which Peter loved so much. Pete will be forever missed as he is received in heaven.

Arrangements are with Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
