HURON – Defensive miscues and free bases from pitchers led to a rough day at the ballpark for Huron’s 13U Teener team Sunday against Pierre in a doubleheader at Klock Field, dropping both games.
The Huron defense totaled nine errors between the two games while Huron pitchers allowed 11 walks, uncorked 15 wild pitches, and hit two Pierre batters with pitches on the day.
In the first game, Davis Chase made the start on the mound for Huron, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing 12 runs, though only two of the runs were counted as earned runs. He struck out four. Parker Bischoff relieved Chase and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a run, striking out two.
Pierre jumped out with four runs in the third and collected another five in the top of the sixth inning while the Huron offense struck for all three of its runs in the fourth in a 12-3 loss.
Hunter Fenske had a pair of hits, including a double, and a walk to pace the home offense. Gavin Waldner added a double and a stolen base on the day.
In the nightcap, Pierre scored 10 runs across the first two innings of the game, and the home squad could never catch back up as Pierre swept the Sunday doubleheader, taking the second game by the score of 15-4.
Cooper Bischoff started the game on the mound for Huron, but he lasted just an inning, allowing eight runs. Blaise Simon replaced him, going 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs. Landon Schutt closed out the game on the bump with 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs.
Chase Schuchhardt tallied a pair of hits, including a double. Schutt and Simon each stole a base.
The 13U club is now 5-6 on the season heading into a doubleheader tonight against Brookings at Klock Field beginning at 5 p.m.
