Police Department notes return of counterfeit currency

HURON – Police said they are once again investigating reports of counterfeit $100 bills being passed at local businesses.
“Please be extra careful when accepting any $100 bills at this time,” said Detective Capt. Casey Spinsby. “Even be cautious of accepting these bills from friends and trusted associates as they may have unknowingly come into possession of a counterfeit bill during a transaction.”
The Huron Police Department has posted photos on its Facebook page of a counterfeit bill that was recently turned in.
The word “Fake” appears on the bills in these photos, but will not appear on the bills the public encounters, Spinsby said.
It was written on the bill after it was turned into the police.

He said there are a few things people can look for that distinguish the counterfeit bills, including:
• Small red Chinese writing printed on the back side of the bill.
• Counterfeit money detector pens will leave a brown mark.
• If people hold a bill to the light they will not see Franklin’s face in the watermark portion.
Anyone determining that a bill is fake should call the police department.
Several weeks ago, the police department received several reports that counterfeit bills were being circulated at local businesses.
Detectives spent several hours talking to witnesses, interrogating suspects and watching surveillance video, Spinsby said.
“Because of that hard work, we were able to make an arrest in connection with those reported incidents,” he said.
