HURON — Putters and Scoops, located on the shores of Ravine Lake, is open and ready to offer a full array of summer fun.

They are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The facility features an 18-hole miniature golf course, basketball courts, and rentals of paddle boats, paddle boards and kayaks. The Putters and Scoops building has indoor seating, with a variety of sandwiches, salads and appetizers on the menu — and new this year, a permit to sell beer.

Beer will be available from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

“Beer can be consumed indoors or at the golf course and around the building,” said Deanna Helvik, who has operated the business for the past three years.

“It’s been a lot of work, but I think we’re ready,” she added.

Helvik said she has a staff of 13 who will help oversee activities throughout the summer.

Ravine Lake Park, located at 800 Easy Street, features a sand beach and a paved bike and walking trail — nearly a mile long — that surrounds the lake.

The area has been developed with benches and a handicap accessible fishing dock on Izaak Walton Island. The park itself was developed in the 1930s by the WPA (Work Progress Association).

The building was constructed in the 1930s and was originally used as a bathhouse for swimmers at the lake. Over the past 90 years it has also served as a warming house and a concession stand, and now, an air conditioned diner.

About 20 years ago, partnerships between private citizens and the City of Huron Parks and Recreation board allowed for major improvements to be made to both the island and the building.

Each year, volunteers plant and care for flowers both in planters and garden plots around the building and throughout the island. The island features a gazebo that can be reserved for weddings and other special occasions. The gazebo has electricity with a capacity of 50.

There are two shelters with picnic tables that may be reserved for special events at the park. The east shelter has electricity with a capacity of 300, and the southwest shelter has electricity and a mini-kitchen with a capacity of 200.
