Race of Champions qualifiers held at MCS

MILLER — Three Huron drivers recorded wins during the WISSOTA Race of Champions qualifier held Saturday at Miller Central Speedway.
While the most thrilling finish of the night came in the WISSOTA modified feature race, it was the WISSOTA super stock main event which served as the fan favorite.

Austin Arbogast of Huron emerged with his first career feature win in the super stock race.

Veteran driver Doug VanLiere of Madison, who started third, moved to the front of the field during the opening stages of the 15-lap, with Arbogast, who started fourth making his way into the second spot.

After a few attempts at getting past VanLiere on the low side, Arbogast moved up a lane and powered past on the outside to snag the lead.

Arbogast pulled away from the field as the laps wound down, but a caution with six laps remaining erased that advantage.

Despite having a fresh start, the remainder of the field had nothing for Arbogast as he held on to secure the win. Damon Hoftiezer of Ft. Pierre, who won the division’s lone heat race, was second, followed by Robert Schmitt of Redfield and VanLiere.

Dale Ames of Huron provided the most thrilling finish of the night in the WISSOTA modified feature race.

Ryan Damm of Watertown, who started on the pole, took the lead on the opening lap, with Ames, who started on the outside of the front row, in hot pursuit.

While Ames challenged for the lead on several occasions throughout the 15-lap feature race, he never was able to complete the pass on the leader.

With a strong run on the outside coming out of corner four on the final lap, Ames edged Damm by the slimmest margin at the flag stand to secure his second consecutive feature win at Miller Central Speedway.

Mike Stearns of Hecla, who won the division’s lone heat race, was third, followed by Nick Wranek of Harrisburg and Arne Anderson of Watertown.

Cole Searing of Huron inked his first win of the season at Miller Central Speedway and his second in as many nights in the WISSOTA late model main event on Saturday.

Searing had little trouble making his way to the front of the field from his starting spot on the outside of the second row. Once out front, he pulled away for the victory, after recording the same feat on Friday night at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen.

Curt Kranz of Watertown was second, while David Carlson of Huron made a last-lap pass on Cody Martin of Mitchell to finish third and Kelly Duffy of Winner rounded out the top five.

Searing was also the winner in the lone heat race in the late model division.

The other three classes in action on Saturday had repeat feature winners.

Broc Stout of Winner inked his fifth straight feature win in the WISSOTA street stock division. He started fourth and used the high side of the race track to make his way to the front and remain as the lone driver to win a main event this season at MCS.

Kyle Bertram of Dallas was second, followed by Chris Serr of Aberdeen, Jodie Michaelsohn of Aberdeen and Luke Johnson of Miller.
Stout and Michaelsohn were the heat race winners in the street stock division.

Jayden Michaelsohn of Aberdeen won his third straight feature race in the Pump-N-Pak pure stock division on Saturday. He held off a stiff challenge from Wyatt Brooker of Tulare, who was seeking his second win of the season, to secure the victory.

Mike Hammill of Miller was third in the pure stock feature race, while Curtis Johnson of Miller and Camden Rassel of Woonsocket were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Brooker and Aaron Holan of Kimball won the pure stock heat races.

Adam Brotherton of Huron inked his second straight and third overall feature win at Miller Central Speedway on Saturday in the WISSOTA Midwest modified division.

Brotherton held off Lorin Johnson of Miller for the victory. Lane Johnson of Miller was third, followed by Nathan Grehl of Hitchcock and Britt Williams of Ft. Pierre, who started 10th in the 17-car field.

Winning Midwest modified heat races were Cayden Schmeling of Watertown, Blake Meyer of Huron and Brotherton.

The winners of the WISSOTA classes from Saturday at now eligible to compete in the WISSOTA Race of Champions at the WISSOTA 100, which is slated for Sept. 14-18 at I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls, Minn.
