Repairing the roof

HURON — The Huron Museum Board of Directors extends a hearty ‘thank you’ to everyone who has made donations to the Centennial Stone Church Center.

According to Holly Hohm, president of the Museum Board of Directors, those donations, added to the Huron Community Foundation and Wheeler Family Fund grant monies, have made it possible to get started on the new roof.

Orchard Roofing, a Huron company, began work Monday, Aug. 8 with a crew of nearly a dozen workers.

The owner, Margarito Gonzalez, expects the work to be finished before the weekend.

“It will be such a relief to have the new roof completed,” said Executive Director Louise Van Poll.
“After all the storms, high winds, and torrential rains we’ve experienced, I have been very worried that the old roof could not withstand the weather.”

The Board wishes to express its sincere gratitude for the outpouring of community support for the old Stone Church. With this new roof, the building should be ready to face the next 50 years.

Donations are still needed to complete the repairs to the Stone Church and may be sent to P.O. Box 1254, Huron, SD 57350.
