On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Sarah Waldner Reed Gilbert, age 93, started her new life whole and complete, and now has no joint pain. She shares her nurturing and inclusive servant heart with her Master and Savior, Jesus Christ, in death and in life.
Sarah was born March 17, 1928, on a farm in Spink County to Peter S. and Rebecca (Hofer) Waldner. She grew up in a home that spoke German as their first language. However, Sarah learned to speak English at school. She and her brother, John Rueben Waldner, attended a one-room rural school in Cornwall Township and she later attended Huron High School. Sarah also had a younger sister, Ada Waldner, who had a disability and could not attend school.
After high school, Sara worked as a waitress in Huron. In February 1951, she married Shurrel “Don” Reed from Waubay. In 1953, Sarah gave birth to her daughter and lifelong friend, Pamela Reed North. They lived in Spink and Hughes County until 1956, when they moved to Huron. Sarah worked as a waitress and as a housekeeper.
Sarah had a strong faith in God, was an active participant in several local churches, and had a special affinity for her faith family at First Baptist Church of Huron.
Her husband, Don passed away in 1982. In 1994, she married a long-time family friend, Eugene Gilbert of Hitchcock. They were married for 12 years and lived in Huron. Together they enjoyed many activities, such as, being active in their church, gardening, delivering flowers to the nursing home, playing dominos and Skip-bo, and visiting friends and family. Eugene passed away in 2007.
Sarah was a hard worker who saw value in everyone. She strived to be a good Christian and to share God’s love with others. Her green thumb, uplifting actions and words, and tasty baked goods will be missed.
Sarah had a full life. Survivors include her daughter, Pam (Doug) North of Huron; her granddaughters, Brenda (Tom Gausman) North of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Lisa (Rich) Engels of Woodbury, Minn., and Sara (John) Bovill of Beresford; her great-grandchildren, Mya and Konard Engels; her step-daughters, Lois (Dennis) Finnegan of Rapid City, Janice (James) Brockel of Rapid City and Shirley Steele of Ft Collins, Colo.; and her cousin, Ruth (Bob) White of Montrose.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Rebecca Waldner; her siblings, John Rueben Waldner and Ada Waldner; a step-daughter, Nan (Lloyd) Whatley; a step-son, Don Gilbert; and a step-son-in-law, Dan Steele.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Huron and the Huron Salvation Army.
