HURON — The School Board of Education held its annual meeting Monday night, with Garrett Bischoff selected as the chairperson of the board for the 2019-20 school year.
Named vice president of the board was Tim Van Berkum, while sophomore Victoria Larson was welcomed as a student board member to begin attending meetings at the start of the school year.
Many organizational details were ironed out at the meeting held Monday, such as determining administrators, salaries, meeting dates, plus much more which can be viewed online at www.huron.k12.sd.us.
It was also highlighted that the school’s surplus auction is being held on-line today at benmeyerauctions.com, with pick-up scheduled for Wednesday.

Linda Pietz and Jolene Konechne presented information on NWEA testing, following a report at the previous meeting which outlined extensive data showing the growth of students in math and reading. NWEA testing is given throughout the district to show how students grow from one year to the next.
“We were very pleased with being able to track this first of all, and to truly show the growth that our go-getters continue to make of what they are doing and how they are learning,” Pietz said.
Superintendent Terry Nebelsick shared the growth of educational excellence through training that has been taking place throughout the district.
“This has been a wonderful summer of leadership opportunities,” Nebelsick noted. “I had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. and be part of the national advocacy conference. As one of the six representatives from South Dakota, we received extensive training Monday, then Tuesday was dedicated to going to Capitol Hill.”
The leadership initiatives are set to continue with more training taking place this week and throughout the summer, and a third leg which will take place in the fall.
In old business, the board approved the goal statements that were determined at sessions held last month, as well as the approval of handbooks throughout the districts.
The board also looked at the school bus pick-up locations in new business, and discussed approving the agreement made in 2013-14 with neighboring districts. This will be revisited at a later date along with a comprehensive plan for special education.
