Washington 4-5 Center
It is November and some of the students who have moved here from other countries have just experienced their first snow. This is always an exciting time, as the students did not quite know what to expect. They will like the snow for a little while, but then their feelings about snow will probably change.
Some of the fourth- and fifth-grade students are working with the new ESL curriculum, Frames for Fluency. This curriculum encourages ESL students to speak in English. The students are able to use words, pictures, and sentence frames in order to form their own thoughts and ideas. This also gives ESL students the confidence they need in order to become better writers.
Other students are working with leveled readers and practicing reading fluency. A project many fourth graders will start working on is writing a nonfiction article about a different country in the world. They will have to research the climate and lifestyle of a different country to write about.
After the holiday break, students will begin preparing for the ACCESS test. This test measures how much English the students know.
