Huron Middle School
• Eighth-grade math students in Lisa Kissner’s class are off to a very busy start. They are using a variety of tools to help reinforce learning every day. Students are one-to-one with their ipads and have been using several websites and apps to help them reinforce the daily instruction. A few of the ones used in eighth grade math include IXL, Kahoot, Quizizz, Khan Academy, and ThatQuiz. The new curriculum this year is entitled Go Math! and they are currently working through scientific notation in the latest module. Students have discovered the purpose of using this type of notation versus standard form of very large or very small numbers. Students are beginning discussions of how they can perform the operations with numbers written in scientific notation form. Students will apply this learning in the upcoming week to real life situations. Conferences are right around the corner as the first quarter is about over for the year!
Conferences will be held Oct. 22-23rd at HMS.

Buchanan K-1 Center
• Students in Betty Gussiaas’ kindergarten classroom at the Buchanan K-1 Center have been reviewing the letters of the alphabet.

In math they have been concentrating on the numbers 1-5: recognition, value, and correct formation. The students have been introduced to the concept of graphing, and are learning to compare two numbers, referring to them as more than, less than, or equal to                                They are using several activities from the “Boost Up” program to strengthen auditory and visual focus skills.

• In kindergarten students are working on learning to write their names by using fruit loops and other manipulatives. Students are also learning one letter per day using ABC Bootcamp. The kids get to make silly hats to go along with each letter. They also love using food to reinforce the letter being learned. In math they are learning to identify and write the numbers 1-5, shapes, and colors.  Come check out the Buchanan K-1 Center hallways!  They are filled with the students’ work!

• Kindergarten students are learning to make connections to text using the Making Meaning curriculum. They read a new book each week and learn four new vocabulary words associated with the book. The students learn how to take turns talking and listening, and how to partner share during story time. They sit knee-to-knee with a partner and answer questions about key parts of the book.
They just finished chapter 1 in social studies. Kindergarten students have learned about cooperation, solving a problem, symbols of the United States, and rules — at school, at home and in the community.

Madison 2-3 Center
• In reading classes at the Madison 2-3 Center, third-grade students in classes taught by Amber Weber, Brittni Strand and Sharla Mees are working on the Think, Pair, and Share strategy for sharing ideas. They are also working on visualizing while reading. Finally, they are working on making inferences.
In writing, the students are finishing up working on sentence structures and learning about what makes a good sentence. They are moving into writing personal narratives. In grammar, the students have learned about nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They will be moving into pronouns, regular and irregular plural nouns. In science they are getting into the swing of a new school year by learning about balanced and unbalanced forces. Students will be able to describe the effects of net force and how forces can change an object’s speed or direction. In social studies, students are learning about the three types of communities. In math, all three classes are working hard on finishing the first chapter. They  have been busy learning to round to the nearest 100 and 10. They have been expanding adding and subtraction in this chapter as well. Third graders have learned several ways to add and subtract multi-digit numbers.
