Team Moeding fundraiser set for Aug. 18

HURON — An event created to benefit a local person with cancer has continued after his death and will be re-booted this year on Aug. 18.
It is the Team Moeding 5K Run/Walk for cancer research. Registration for this year’s race will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the race, with the race itself scheduled for 10 a.m., in Prospect Park. The $30 registration includes an event hat, with proceeds earmarked to benefit others in the Huron area battling cancer.
The road-race was started in 2012, after Cavour native David Moeding was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2011.
“David was an avid athlete and he loved training for an competing in triathlons,” said event organizer and family friend Rebekah Storm. “The first run/walk in 2012 was a fundraiser for David and his family.”

““The Team Moeding race was something that was started by our dear friend Rebekah Storm for David when he was diagnosed with cancer,” said Megan, David’s wife. “Running and doing triathlons was one of his passions in life. It gave David great joy to see so many family and friends and community members from the Huron area come out and support him and our family and do something that he loves to do. He wanted to share the love he felt with others who were battling cancer and let them have the opportunity to feel the love that he felt when his friends and family came together to support him.”
The event continued from 2013-15, even after Moeding won his battle with cancer, with funds going to others fighting the disease. In 2017, David unexpectedly lost his life to an infection, after being cancer-free for years.
“People often ask what they can do when their loved one is sick or passes away, because friends and family want to help. This is one way a person can help, by taking time out and showing that you care,” Megan said. “This year‘s race is bittersweet. It’s hard to believe we’re now having the race in memory of David and one of our recipients, Laura. Laura Feldman was a fundraiser recipient who passed away last summer as well.
“It is something that he loved so it’s an honor to carry it on in his memory,” Megan said. “The race is something we can continue to do to help keep David‘s legacy alive and to help share his memory with his children and show them the love their father felt for others. The kids and I are looking forward to seeing the many family and friends who continue to support us as life moves forward.”
“We want to continue to honor David, who was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, friend, husband, and father,” Storm said. “This year’s event will be a fundraiser and all proceeds will go directly to David’s wife, Megan, and their children, Maddi, 6, and Wilson, 1. Most importantly, those who loved David will come together and celebrate him. We plan on continuing the event in the future, as this was so dear to David.”
