Terms open on task force and committee

Posted

HURON — Residents interested in serving on a local board or commission have an opportunity as there are openings on the Green Energy Task Force and the Community Improvement Committee.
Commissioner Gary Harrington said it would be a two-year commitment for the task force. Terms on the improvement committee run four years.
Meanwhile, in a light agenda, commissioners approved a job description to be posted internally for a new position of detective captain in the police department.
Police Chief Kevin VanDiepen said the proposal is to move a detective sergeant in the department to detective captain.
That individual would oversee evidence in criminal cases and reduce the possibility of liability issues. It would also put patrol captains back on the street more, he said.

Creating the position will only cost $1,100, he said.
Commissioners also:
• Approved a $114,193 progress payment to Kyburz-Carlson Construction Co. of Aberdeen for work on the new public works building in the West Industrial Park.
The payment is to cover primarily foundation work. Construction will resume once the steel for the building arrives in town.
• Set Jan. 29 as the bid-opening date for water treatment chemicals, a dump truck for the street department and a pickup truck for the water-sewer department.
• Set Jan. 22 as the public hearing date to transfer a 2018 retail on-sale liquor license from Greater Huron Development Corporation to Spirit of the Prairie, doing business as Ground Round, 2233 Kansas Ave. S.E.
• Accepted the resignation of Officer Sam Beuch.
• Approved a request from the Huron High School Art Club to paint murals on the walls at the Campus Center Fitness Room as a community project.
• Announced that the commission won’t meet and city offices will be closed Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The Monday garbage and recycling routes will be collected on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Containers should be out at the collection points on Tuesday night as trucks won’t be rerouted.
