Top-ranked De Smet defeats No. 2 White River in Hanson Classic

MITCHELL - The top two teams in Class “B” boys’ basketball squared off in the Hanson Classic Saturday, with the top-ranked De Smet Bulldogs using a 23-10 burst in the third quarter to distance themselves on the way to a 63-49 victory over the No. 2 White River Tigers at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Bulldogs move to 11-1 behind 27 points and 11 rebounds from Damon Wilkinson. Kalen Garry added 24 points and hoisted eight rebounds.

Rhett Osthus dished out six assists and grabbed eight boards of his own for De Smet.

The Tigers fall to 7-2 despite a game-high 30 points from Joe Sayler. Sayler led White River with six rebounds. Kendrell Cuevas added 10 points.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday at Colman-Egan school.

West Central 68, Clark/Willow Lake 53
MITCHELL - The West Central Trojans defeated the Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones 68-53 as part of the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell Saturday.

Wilson Droge was nearly perfect shooting for the Trojans, going 8-of-9 from the field and 3-of-3 from the line for 21 points as West Central moves to 7-3.

Grafton Stroup and Dillon Jackson each added 15 points and four rebounds for the Trojans.

Clark/Willow Lake fell to 3-4. Kaplan Felberg led the scoring with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Tyler O’Neill put in 12 points while Brady Jordan scored 11 points and dished out seven assists for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones will host Great Plains Lutheran at Clark tonight.

Sisseton 64, Redfield 53
REDFIELD - The Sisseton Redmen outscored the Redfield Pheasants 37-26 in the second half to turn a tie game at half into an 11-point victory Saturday in Redfield, defeating the Pheasants 64-53.

The Redmen move to 4-4 with the victory, while the Pheasants fall to 3-7 after the loss.

Riley BraveBull led just four Redmen in the scoring column with 23 points. Jason Fisher added 19 points and a game-high 13 points for Sisseton while Ty Langager scored 15 points.

The Pheasants were lead by Jerron Haider with 14 points. Mitchell Mack added 12 points and Justin Ratigan grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the team.

Sisseton also won the JV game 47-37.

Redfield travels to Tulare to face Hitchcock-Tulare in a doubleheader Tuesday.

IPSWICH — The James Valley Christian Lady Vikings jumped out early and never looked back Saturday afternoon, as they ran past the Ipswich Tigers 55-34 in non-conference girls’ basketball.

The Lady Vikes improved to 6-5 on the season behind Karilyn Wieting’s 18 point effort, while teammates Alexa Goertz had 14 points and Brenna Held added 11 and grabbed seven boards. JVC forced 17 Ipswich turnovers and held a five rebound advantage, resulting in 14 more shots from the field in the game.

Ipswich got 15 points from Katie Bierman, as the Tigers fell to 4-8 on the year. Quincy Olivier led the Ipswich rebounders with seven.

The Lady Vikings return to action Thursday, when they host Miller at the JVC gymnasium.

IROQUOIS - The Great Plains Lutheran Panthers used a 20-4 burst in the second quarter to distance themselves from the Iroquois/Doland Lady Chiefs en route to a 52-34 final Saturday in Iroquois.

The Panthers were led by Mali York with 20 points. Halle Bauer dropped in 14 points and Madeline Prahl added 10 points as Great Plains Lutheran moved to 8-4 on the season.

Bryn Holman grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers.

The Lady Chiefs fell to 3-8 despite 20 points from Katie Dubro.

Iroquois/Doland hosts Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in Iroquois tonight.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS - The Wessington Springs Lady Spartans jumped out to a 35-9 halftime advantage and held serve from that point, defeating the Marty Lady Braves by a final score of 69-34 Saturday in Wessington Springs.
Springs moves to 5-8 with the win while Marty falls to 4-3.

Kirstie Munsen led the Lady Spartans in scoring with 20 points. Avery Orth dropped in 18 points and cleared the glass with 19 rebounds.

Carissa Scheel added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Wessington Springs.

Keya Rouse led the Lady Braves with 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Lady Spartans travel to Dakota Christian Tuesday to face Andes Central/Dakota Christian.
