HURON — A Huron business with more than 130 years of providing goods and services to the community, is in new hands, as of Oct. 14.

Anderson Furniture, on west Third Street, along with other properties owned by the corporation, were purchased on Thursday by Mike Marcil, who owns several different companies under the umbrella of Orange Properties Management, Inc., from Fargo, N.D. Marcil closed the sale and is working with the current staff on the direction of the longtime furniture outlet.

Which is…?

“Everything the same,” Marcil said. “Really, nothing at all is going to change with Anderson Furniture and the rental properties,” he said Friday morning, relaxing in a chair in the furniture store showroom with a trio of employees. “The furniture store is going to remain the same, with the exception of we plan to expand the offerings. The core of Anderson Furniture - quality products, exceptional customer service and attention to detail - those things are all going to remain.

“Heck, that’s part of the appeal of making the purchase,” he said.

Don Knudson, Anderson’s longtime manager, will step into a “general manager” role, while both longtime sales associate Cheryl Hofer and newly hired associate Shannon Bretz will see expanded sales roles, with the influx of new product lines and sales opportunities.

Marcil said it was the opportunity to expand his company into South Dakota. “We’re established in North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Arizona,” Marcil said. “Orange Properties has eight different companies inside it, specializing in real estate, marketing, hospitality, and we are developing AirBnBs on a regular basis. Right now, we have rentals in 30 small cities in the region.”

He said is working on a plan that will include packaging furniture, flooring and home decorations for commercial, and corporate rental operations. “I am looking to create a logistics center here - the distribution network is already here and set up.”

Expect some subtle changes to take place with stock at Anderson’s over the next few weeks and stay tuned for more on Marcil’s plans going forward.

“Huron is one of the most diverse cities that I have seen and I have been all around the world in more than 70 countries,” Marcil said. “I am very excited about the optimism among the young people I have met since I came here. I’m excited to be in Huron!”
