HURON — Vera L. Warnke, 85, of Huron passed away Monday, August 13, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Pierre.
Her Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Friday, August 17, at the Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron with burial in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery at Huron. Visitation with the family present, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Welter Funeral Home or one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Vera Warnke, the daughter of Wayne and Faye (Strickler) Nelson, was born February 22, 1933, in Esmond. She attended school and graduated from Carthage High School. Vera married Leo Warnke December 25, 1950, at the Esmond United Methodist in Esmond. Vera and her husband owned and operated the Standard Oil Station in Huron for many years. Vera also worked at The Inn and at K-Mart jewelry department for many years.
Vera was a member of the Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the American Legion, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and Dakota Harmony in Huron. She loved spending time with her family at Lake Byron boating. Vera enjoyed working on puzzles with her daughter and crafting specialty items such as wind chimes. She was a bargain shopper and loved going to dollar stores and rummage sales. She enjoyed hosting family dinners and being surrounded by her grandkids and great-grandkids.
Grateful for having shared in Vera’s life are her two sons, Leo (Lynne) Warnke, of Brookings, and Ross (Bev) Warnke of Huron, daughter, Connie (Mike) Sarahan of Pierre; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, LaVonne Garry of Rochester, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo in 2011; brother, Robert (Deloris) Nelson; and sister, Maxine Lindstrom.
