Wolsey-Wessington third in Class B

SIOUX FALLS — Each set was a battle, but the Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds were able to come away with a 3-1 victory over the Burke Lady Cougars to claim third place in the Class B State Volleyball Tournament Saturday at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

Set scores for the Lady Warbirds were 19-25, 25-19, 26-24, and 26-24.

Burke sophomore Paige Bull opened the match with a pair of kills but a pair of errors by the Lady Cougars quickly tied the set 2-2, and the first set continued back and forth in that manner.

The Lady Warbirds’ Leah Williams and Burke’s Adisyn Indahl traded kills around the teams trading hitting errors back and forth. On the way to a 16-16 tie, the teams were knotted up 10 different times.

The Lady Cougars were able to get a run of three highlighted by a pair of aces from Savannah Geaghan to pull out to a 21-17 lead. That drew a timeout from W-W coach Lindy Uttecht.

Mya Boomsma got a kill out of the timeout, but Burke was able to go on another three-point run to get to set point. Boomsma nailed a kill to stave off defeat for one point, but her next attempt was rejected, giving Burke the 25-19 victory in the first set.

After a quiet first set, Boomsma opened the second set with a flurry. She had a pair of kills and a pair of aces as the Warbirds jumped out to an 8-4 lead and drew a timeout from Burke coach Billie Jo Indahl.

After the timeout, a Boomsma ace and a Williams kill pushed the W-W lead out to 10-4. The Lady Cougars got a pair of kills from Kailee Frank to come back to 10-6, but the two teams continued to stay roughly five points apart.

An ace from Emree White made the score 19-12 Wolsey-Wessington and drew Indahl’s second timeout.

Burke went on a 3-0 run out of the timeout before the Lady ‘Birds responded with a 3-0 run of their own.

Adisyn Indahl led a 3-0 run with a kill and a service ace to get the score to 22-18. The two teams exchanged service errors, and then Williams nailed two attacks to finish off the set for a 25-19 Warbird victory, tying the match at one set apiece.

Burke jumped out quickly in the third set behind an Indahl kill and a pair of Warbird errors before Boomsma got a kill to make it 3-1.

Indahl continued her early dominance in the third set, while the Lady Warbirds struggled to connect with a clean hit, making five hitting errors before Uttecht called a timeout with the score at 11-5.

Williams got a kill out of the timeout, and after Kailee Frank nailed a pair of attacks, Wolsey-Wessington went on a 5-0 run to get within 13-12 and draw a timeout from Burke.

The teams began playing back and forth at that point, exchanging the lead until Kailynn Dorris dominated at the net with a pair of blocks and forced a hitting error by Burke to put the Warbirds in the lead 22-19 and draw the Lady Cougars’ second timeout.

Frank came out of the timeout and nailed three straight attacks to tie the score and draw the timeout from Uttecht.

After a Warbirds hitting error put Burke up 23-22, a Williams kill and a block brought W-W to set point.

Bull got a kill to tie the set, but the Lady Warbirds nailed the final two points to win the third set 26-24 and take a 2-1 match lead.

The Lady ‘Birds fell behind early, but a kill and a pair of strong serves from Mallory Miller brought W-W ahead 7-6. Burke then went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Frank.

A trio of kills from the Lady Warbirds got them tied at 12 and draw a timeout from Burke.

The teams exchanged points back and forth until a pair of kills and a hitting error gave Burke a 19-16 lead and drew a timeout from the Lady Warbirds. The Warbirds had a hitting error out of the timeout, but then rattled off three straight points to tie the set at 19.

After a pair of points from the Lady Warbirds tied the score 22-22, Burke took their final timeout. A hitting error gave Burke a point out of the timeout before Williams tied it back up.

After the teams tied at 24 and Burke sent a hit wide, the Warbirds got a block to win the fourth set 26-24 and take the match 3-1 to claim third place.

The Lady Warbirds finish the season at 30-5 behind 17 kills, 26 digs, and a pair of aces from Williams. Boomsma added 11 kills, 14 digs, and three service aces.

Kailynn Dorris recorded five solo blocks and three block assists along with a pair of kills. White had four kills, a pair of aces, two solo blocks, and four block assists.

Burke drops to 32-6 despite 20 kills and 25 digs from Indahl. Frank had 15 kills and Bull had 11 kills, two solo blocks, and a block assist.

Williams and Boomsma were selected to the All-Tournament team for the Lady Warbirds. Williams had 34 kills, six aces, and 62 digs in the tourney. Boomsma had 37 kills, five aces, and 39 digs during the tournament.
