HURON — The six-person team “Reasonable Redneck Stud Fee” was crowned the champion in the 26th Ringneck Festival competitive hunt Saturday, during the post-hunt banquet at the Huron Event Center.

Reasonable Redneck Stud Fee, captained by Kent Shelton harvested the maximum of 18 pheasants, and had two shells remaining of the 24 allotted to the team, for a remarkable 82% kill rate.

A total of 20 six-person teams participated in this year’s competitive hunt, at various sites around the area.

Danny Hofer was the landowner for the winning team.

Each winning tea, member, along with Hofer, receives a plaque and a commemorative shotgun as a trophy for their achievement.

Finishing as runners up was the “Fly-N-Gun” team, captained by Dan Cathcart, which also collected 18 birds, but had only one shell remaining.

“Straight Shooters” harvested 17 birds and ”Who Let the Dogs Out?” finished with 16 kills.

A total of 221 roosters were taken during this year’s competitive hunt, as the field was limited to 20 teams, due to a lack of participating land owners.

In the Bird Dog Challenge, which was contested on Thursday south of Huron.

Two hunters are accompanied into a field by a bird dog, with ‘planted’ pheasants, the location of which are unknown to the hunters, already in place.

This year’s competition was razor close, as the top three teams finished within 32 total points.

Taking the top spot and winning commemorative plaques of the event, were Shelton and Jeremy Coon, hunting over a Labrador Retriever named “Kane,” with a total of 2,746 points. Second place went to the team of Searing/Dorris with 2,728 and third was Shelton and Krugman with 2,714.
