ABERDEEN — The Aberdeen Smittys spring ball team swept a doubleheader from the Huron Tigers on Sunday in Aberdeen to end the regular season for Huron with a 1-19 record.
The Tigers took an early 2-1 lead in the opening game and even fought for a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but a big Aberdeen rally led to five runs and an 8-5 victory for the home club.
Jack Pederson pitched the majority of the game, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and three walks. He struck out five.
Logan Leyendecker got the final two outs of the sixth inning, with one walk and one strikeout.
The Huron offense was able to manage 11 baserunners, with three Tigers reaching base multiple times and six total stolen bases as a team.
Pederson and Oakley Anderson each had a single and a walk. Anderson also added a stolen base. Cooper Bischoff drew a pair of walks and had a steal.
Tommie Martin had a double. Bubba Peterson, Chase Schuchhardt, Kolby Hofer, and Trace Wenz each added a steal.
The Tigers again took a 2-1 lead in the nightcap, but big innings in the third and fourth inning put the game out of reach as Aberdeen won 9-6.
Peterson opened the game on the mound, allowing eight runs (three earned) over four innings on five hits and four walks, striking out two.
Leyendecker closed out the final two innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk, striking out two.
The Tiger offense closed the season with one of its best team efforts, garnering 16 baserunners in the loss.
Peterson led the way with a pair of doubles, a walk, and a stolen base. Wenz had a pair of singles and was hit by pitch, adding four steals.
Leyendecker and Schuchhardt each had a pair of singles. Leyendecker added three steals.
Hofer had a single and a walk and stole two bases while Anderson had a pair of walks and a steal.
Bischoff added one more steal.
