Annual Brett Boomer golf classic on Saturday

Posted

HURON –– The 13th annual Brett Boomer Memorial Golf Classic is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron. Entry fee is $60 to include green fees for 18 holes, golf cart, food, and beverages.

The day will start (and end) at The Red Hog Pub and Casino in Alpena, with an 8 a.m. breakfast before departing around 9:30 for Huron to golf. After the tournament is over, participants can return to The Red Hog.

The day honors the memory of Brett Boomer, who passed away in February 2012 from a sudden heart attack while playing basketball at the Alpena Community Center gym. He would later pass away at HRMC in Huron. The Alpena volunteer fire department was the first on scene, and the proceeds from the classic will go to the department.

The golf tournament was originally held at the Wessington Springs Country Club, where Brett and his brother Todd spent many summers with their grandparents, learning to golf on the course. Last year, the golf portion was moved to Broadland Creek as the Wessington Springs course could no longer accommodate the group. Last year’s event drew 60 golfers and many more helpers, family, friends, and onlookers.
