Hitchcock-Tulare 62, Iroquois/Lake Preston 8
LAKE PRESTON — The defending 9B champion Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots scored early and often Friday night, running away from the Iroquois/Lake Preston Sharks with a score-shortened 62-8 win.
Eric Salmen scored three times in the first quarter, two on passes of six and 34-yards from quarterback Brendan Nowell, and once on an 11-yard run, to stake the Patriots to a 22-0 cushion after one quarter of play.
Nowell scored twice to open the second period, as he sprinted for a 93-yard touchdown run.
Then, after the Patriots forced a safety, returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to paydirt.
Mason Tschetter got in on the scoring with a 25-yard run, before the Sharks took advantage of great field position to punch in a 2-yard run by Josh McMasters.
H-T scored twice more in the half, the first on a Payton Carter Chasing Hawk 37-yard TD reception from Nowell, then Salmen and Nowell hooked up for a 53-yard catch and run that made it 56-8 at the half.
Salmen ended the game on the first drive of the second half, scoring on a 15-yard pass from Nowell.
The Patriots rolled up 361 yards in total offense, split pretty evenly, with 198 yards rushing and 163 through the air.
Nowell was 6-11 for 163 yards and five touchdowns and also ended with 118 yards rushing.
Salmen ran for 48 yards and a score and also had 120 yards in receptions for three more touchdowns.
Iroquois/Lake Preston ended with 58 yards in total offense in the game. McMasters was 7-17 for 76 yards and two interceptions.
The Patriots, now 2-1 will host Waverly-South Shore in Tulare next Friday, while the Sharks, who fall to 0-2, are on the road to Estelline.
