GETTYSBURG - The Wolsey-Wessington Lady Warbirds claimed second place at Saturday’s Lady Battler Volleyball Invitational in Gettysburg.
The Lady Warbirds defeated Ipswich 25-13 and 25-12 in the opening round. In the second game of the day, Wolsey-Wessington swept Potter County 25-16 and 25-11. The Lady Warbirds finished preliminary play with a 25-21 and 25-19 victory over Philip.
The Lady Warbirds then fell in three to the Faulkton Trojans in the championship game. The Trojans move to 18-7 with the 25-21, 22-25, and 25-21 victory. as Carley Cotton had eight kills on 38 of 41 hitting and also led the Faulkton defense with 21 digs.
The Lady Warbirds finish the day at 21-3. In the championship match, Samara Clemente Led the W-W attack with 10 kills on 26 of 30 hitting and also had two blocks. Lainey Uttecht led the Lady Warbird defense with 21 digs and Payton Kemnitz set up the offense with 15 assists.
The Lady Warbirds host Highmore-Harrold in a 281 Conference match Tuesday.
Set scores for the Pirates were 20-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18, and 16-14.
The Pirates move to 9-13 behind a big night from Jada Baloun, who was 33 of 34 serving with seven aces while also leading the H-H attack with 38 of 44 hitting and 14 kills. Brooklyn Baloun set up the Pirate offense with 35 assists.
Kendal Cermak nailed four service aces on 13 of 16 serving and also had nine kills on 42 of 46 swings.
Kenidey Effling paced the Pirate defense with 35 digs.
The Lady Spartans fall to 13-7 despite 21 kills on 56 of 61 hitting by Avery Orth. Orth also had 21 digs and five blocks.
Ashlyn Weber was 16 of 18 serving with five aces for Wessington Springs, Alyssa Grohs was 113 of 115 setting with 29 assists, and Raylee Fagerhaug had 28 digs.
Highmore-Harrold travels to Wolsey to play Wolsey-Wessington Tuesday while the Lady Spartans host Sunshine Bible Academy Tuesday.
