Band with Huron ties plays Monday at Fair

Posted

The RathCo will take to the Northwestern Energy Freedom Stage on Monday at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the South Dakota State Fair. When they do, they’ll be playing a hometown show 70 years in the making.

The band is made up of three siblings and a cousin, between the ages of 12 and 17.

They recently played at The Loud American in Sturgis for six shows leading up to and during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally while also playing a pair of shows at Rally Point in Sturgis during the Rally.

The band members include lead singer Bijou, guitarist Weston, bass player Amelie, and drummer Benjamin.

Benjamin turned 12 just two weeks ago while Amelie is the senior member of the group at 17 (she’s also a senior in high school this year).

The RathCo’s band members have two very notable grandfathers with Huron roots. Rocke Grace and Terry Rathbun are both Huron natives and also both members of the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both receiving both solo induction and also induction as members of multiple bands that have been inducted.

Grace passed in 2020 due to an autoimmune disorder, which has inspired the group along with multiple other bands to begin the Black Hills Music & Medicine benefit concert on Sept. 29 in Rapid City with funds to benefit the Rocke Grace Foundation for Music, with the aim to purchase a dermatoscope for diagnosis.
