HURON — In an announcement delayed by the pandemic, Beadle County was officially named a Purple Heart County on Tuesday morning at the beginning of the county commission’s regular meeting.
The county was presented signs to be placed on highways entering the county as well as parking signs to be utilized within the county as part of the designation.
The Purple Heart Trail was originally established in 1992 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The purpose of the trail is to create a visual and symbolic reminder to honor those who have paid a high price for the freedom to travel and live as a free society.
Beadle County had submitted the proclamation and completed paperwork prior to COVID-19, but once the pandemic hit, the signs could not be made and the presentation of signs was not feasible.
In South Dakota, I-90 is designated as a Purple Heart Trail route across the state. Multiple cities and counties within the state have been designated with Purple Heart distinction, along with multiple individual businesses and colleges within the state.
The City of Huron was designated a Purple Heart City on August 31, 2020.
