Bennett County brings Huron connection to state tournament

HURON — Bennett County brought a strong Huron connection to the Class B State Girls’ Basketball Tournament, which began Thursday and concludes today at Huron Arena.

Three of the five starters for the Lady Warriors are the granddaughters of Dan and Vera O’Neill, who are Huron College graduates.

Dan, who graduated in 1977, was a standout football player for the Scalpers, making the Team of the Decade for the 1970s, and Vera, a 1979 graduate, was a standout basketball player. They now operate the O’Neill Ranch at Harrington.

The couple has six children and 26 grandchildren with two more on the way.

O’Neill granddaughters holding spots in the starting lineup for Bennett County are freshmen Reagan O’Neill and Harley Harris, along with eighth-grader Peyson O’Neill.

“Our lives are full and busy,” Vera said of following their grandchildren’s activities.
