SIOUX FALLS — Bruce D. Redl, 91, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Wessington Springs, passed away peacefully Monday, October 28, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, with visitation at 9:30 a.m. Internment will follow at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
Bruce was born in Iroquois, an only child, to Clarence and Gladys (Kasperson) Redl, on his grandparent’s farm.
He attended school in Iroquois, playing basketball as a starter all four years, and taking his team to the state championships. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army for two years at Fort Ord, Calif. He graduated from Huron College. After college he began a career in the banking industry, where he spent his entire working life.
Bruce married Betty (Zapp) Redl in Huron, on September 20, 1958. The couple were blessed with two daughters, Brenda and Barbara. Bruce and Betty were united in marriage for 64 years, until Betty’s passing in January 2023.
They lived in Huron until moving to Wessington Springs in 1964, where they resided until 2014. After the tornado in June of 2014, they relocated to Sioux Falls.
Bruce spent his banking career at American State Bank in Wessington Springs. Bruce was very involved in the Wessington Springs community. He was the treasurer at St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years and served many years on the Board of Directors at Weskota Manor and Hospital and the Spring Country Club. He was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club and American Legion.
During his free time Bruce enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and playing cards with friends and family. Bruce and Betty were very active in the Catholic Church and the Wessington Springs community.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters, Brenda Redl (John) and Barbara (Pat) Bruhn; five grandchildren, Mallory, Laura, and Mary Redl, Nick (Kassidy) and Bergen Bruhn, and one great-grandchild, Hudson Redl. Other surviving family members include two sisters-in-law, Lottie Wilson of Reno, Nev., and Joyce (Ed) Johnson of Kenosha, Wis., and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
