HURON –– Since 1937, Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) has been working to reach students across the country with the Gospel. The South Dakota state headquarters are in Huron, which leads to an opportunity for the city to host a statewide fundraiser for CEF on May 10.
The group will be hosting their second annual fundraising golf tournament Saturday, May 10, at Broadland Creek Golf Course. The cost is $60 per person or $240 for a team of four with lunch provided and multiple ways to win prizes during the event.
State director Greg Buche actually came into the position through previous involvement with the organization.
“My wife was working in youth ministry and worked with CEF, so when CEF asked me to join the state board, I said yes because I could see the impact it had,” Buche recalled. “Then two months after I joined the board, we went through a director search, and I found out the job description, and I applied for the job. I’ve loved it ever since.”
CEF has been in Huron for 50 years, and Buche says that the mission has remained the same throughout.
“Our goal is to reach as many children as possible with the message of Jesus Christ,” Buche said. “Then we work to get them plugged into a local church.”
Buche explained that CEF is a non-denominational organization that has a once-weekly after-school group known as “Good News Club.” CEF provides snack, helps students to learn and memorize Bible verses, and engages the attending youth in fellowship games and discussions. Youth through elementary school can participate, Buche stated.
The organization continues work in the summer with their “Backyard Club” through teams that go throughout the state during the summer. Last year, CEF sent 50 teams across the state during the summer.
CEF is working to improve on participation, as 15 teams participated last year. The golfing offers a scramble with a hole-in-one contest, pin prizes, and offers mulligans!
