City approves design changes for Jersey Avenue work

Posted

HURON –– While the first actual work will be on the schedule of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Huron City Commission approved an amendment on future design work to address drainage issues crossing Jersey Ave. during Monday evening’s meeting.

The changes in the planning design come from evaluation of the current culverts and the need to do notably more replacement work than previously thought. The commission approved an amendment to the design plan with Infrastructure Design Group for an additional fee not to exceed $27,905.

During public comment, Commissioner Drew Weinreis announced that he will be running for a second term on the commission. Filing date for petitions is Feb. 28.

Commissioners approved a quote from Butler Machinery Company for a compact wheel loader for the solid waste department for use in their new facility. The quoted cost is $109,660.67.

Commissioners also:

• Approved a raffle by Holy Trinity Catholic School at 421 21st St. SW.
• Approved application for abatement and/or refund of property taxes filed by Bethesda Church for property located at 1581 Simmons Ave. SE.
• Approved the hire of Kathryn Aymar for a deputy accounting clerk position, effective Feb. 18.
• Approved the transfer of Kerri Hjellum from solid waste scale operator to accounting technician, effective Feb. 18.
• Approved posting internally and advertising, if needed, for a solid waste scale operator position and a solid waste maintenance 1 position.
• Approved the promotion of Cole Long to Patrol Sergeant, effective Feb. 9.
• Approved the hire of Cody Maxwell as a full-time police officer, effective Feb. 9.
• Approved the second reading of Ordinance 2267-23-415 pertaining to yard requirements.

The solid waste department announced that the department and rubble site will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17, in observance of President’s Day. Monday’s garbage and recycling collection will be done on Wednesday.

City offices are closed and there is no city commission meeting on Feb. 17 as well.
