HURON –– The Huron City Commission approved the plat filed by John and Carrie Derksen for property to the West of Wal-mart that will be utilized for future recreational use by the city.
This property, just to the South of Prairie Eagle Ct., will have further information approved for future recreation plans on the space.
During public comment, Mayor Mark Robish reminded Huron residents and area persons interested as well of Winter Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Nordy Exhibit Hall. The event is intended to be family-focused, with plenty of activities for children, a chili cook-off, and bingo.
The commission also approved multiple plats filed by Danny Hofer to connect property on Kansas Ave. NE to adjoining property.
City Planner Barry Cranston presented two ordinances for first reading. The first ordinance clarified language on fences and building requirements for yards in the city and the second ordinance adjusted requirements for lots within a cul-de-sac area.
Both ordinances will have a second reading on Jan. 27.
Commissioners also:
• Approved a raffle for Huron MS Society.
• Approved the hire of Wanda Barthelman for the Executive Secretary position in the finance office, effective Jan. 21.
• Approved the second reading of the supplemental appropriation ordinance for 2024.
City offices and the solid waste dump site will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The garbage and recycling pickup scheduled for Monday is moved to Wednesday, Jan. 22.
The commission ended the meeting in an executive session regarding contractual matters.
