HURON –– The subject of sidewalks has been a contentious one with the Huron City Commission over the years, and Monday night, a request for some property to not be required to implement sidewalks led to another discussion among the commission.
Craig Metzger, 1415 Iowa Ave. NE, brought the request to the commission. He owns five lots and recently completed building a residence, which triggered the sidewalk discussion. Reviewing the property, Metzger requested to avoid a sidewalk where he had a gravel driveway and the road was also gravel leading to the driveway.
After a lengthy discussion, commissioners voted 4-1 to require a sidewalk on all but the two undeveloped lots, but noted that those lots will require a sidewalk if they are ever developed in the future.
The meeting opened with Commissioner Rhonda Kludt reminding residents that Thursday, June 19, the solid waste department will be closed. Thursday pickup in the city for garbage, recycling, and yard waste will be done on Wednesday, June 18.
Mayor Mark Robish also expressed the sympathy of the city on the loss of Beadle County Commission chairman Doug Ramsell. Robish thanked Ramsell for being willing to put his name out there for the last number of years.
Parks & Rec director Chad Schroder presented a request to purchase furnishings for the Kansas Mall to update to match the work done on Dakota. The cost for the project is $9,262 and will be funded through second penny receipts. This was approved.
The commission approved a contract with Stephanie Sorensen, PhD, for pre-employment psychological screening for the police department, pending legal review of the contract.
