HURON — During the public forum time of the Huron City Commission meeting Monday night, Mayor Mark Robish was able to let his baseball enthusiasm fly as he introduced a state championship youth baseball team from Huron for recognition.
“(Coaches Johnny Hernandez and Peyton Grace) learned everything they know from me,” Robish joked, referring to his time coaching the two coaches of the Huron 13/14U team that won the state championship during a tournament in Brandon held August 2-4.
Robish addressed the struggle of the team throughout the season and recognized their coming together when it mattered.
“These guys had a…tough…season with plenty of losses, and some wins, too,” Robish explained. “They ended the season on a eight- or nine-game winning streak to win it all!”
The team showed off their trophy and took a photo with the Mayor.
Robish also thanked the community for coming out Sunday to support the Battle of the Badges fundraising softball game.
Commissioner Drew Weinreis mentioned that this week is the last week of the citywide cleanup, with the drop off site this week the midway at the State Fairgrounds. Weinreis also noted that Tuesday is the United Way Day of Caring around the community.
The commission approved two pay requests for construction work being done on roads in the city. A pay request of $273,279.71 was approved to Midland Contracting Inc. for the Fourth Street Reconstruction project. The second pay request that was approved was from BX Civil and Construction for the Dakota Ave. project in the amount of $229,902.
People’s Transit Executive Director Gayle Kludt presented her annual update to the commission. She explained that the service has seen ridership continue to increase across town, specifically citing the rides that are given from daycare to preschool, which Kludt explained allows a parent to remain at work and trust that their child will get to preschool on time and safe.
Kludt also discussed the costs associated with the bus system and thanked the city for its support of People’s Transit.
Commissioners also:
• Approved hire of John Tapken as a part-time volunteer firefighter, effective August 13.
• Approved a Century Link letter of agency regarding the changeover of parts of the city phone system.
The commission adjourned the public meeting to meet in executive session on a personnel matter and then had discussion on the 2025 budget in a work session.
