HURON — Added on to Monday evening’s consent agenda for the Huron City Commission was a notice for public hearing set to take place on March 4. The public hearing will be regarding a conditional use permit filed by East Dakota Beef, LLC to construct and operate a meat processing facility.

Parks and Recreation Director Chad Schroder and Human Resource Manager Shanna Sterrett presented a departmental item with three parts. The first was accepting the retirement of Darvin Polsean, Park Maintenance 3, effective May 17. The second part requested permission to post internally for the position with the promotion or transfer effective May 20. The final piece allowed the department to post internally or advertise for any subsequent promotions or vacancies created in the process of meeting the second item. This was all approved.

Commissioner Rich Bragg praised Schroder and Sterrett for looking ahead to plan for impending retirements in order to allow proper time for interviewing and potential job shadow as an employee is voluntarily retiring from a position.

Commissioners also:

• Approved a fireworks display permit filed by Danny Hofer for July 4 at Ravine Lake.
• Approved adjusting years of service toward vacation accrual for Dwayne Bennett, Traffic Maintenance 2.
• Accepted the resignation of Jennifer Littlefield from the Historic Preservation Committee.
• Approved Resolution No. 2024-02 to annex the Kamenz Addition to the City of Huron.
• Approved the resolution to authorize South Dakota Department of Transportation to hire IMEG Consultants Corp. for inspection work on the 3rd St. bridge.

There is no commission meeting Feb. 19 due to President’s Day. The next City Commission meeting will be Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the commission room at City Hall.
