City to hold informational meeting on next stage of Dakota Ave project

Posted

HURON –– The Huron City Commission on Monday evening approved a public meeting notice for Project 2026-02, Dakota Ave. improvements. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18, at 5:30 p.m. at the Huron Event Center.
Commissioner Shawn Harvey stated that the meeting will address the details of the next phase of the Dakota Ave. project, including the street work, tree work, and changes to business entry/exits that are part of the plan from 9th St. S. to 21st St. S.

The meeting opened with Mayor Mark Robish issuing a proclamation recognizing the week of March 16-22 as Agriculture Week in the city.

City planner Barry Cranston then explained the first reading of Ordinance 2270-16-70 regarding flood damage prevention. This was previously approved, but FEMA requested changes to the ordinance, so this is cleanup language. The first reading was approved and the second reading was set for Monday, March 17.

The commission approved two city departments to request funds through Huron Community Foundation grants. The first approval was for the Parks and Recreation Department to utilize funds in the amount of $11,372 for funding to purchase two five-row bleachers for Roger Kasa Baseball Complex. Director Chad Schroder explained that safety regulations deems the current bleachers outdated and unsafe. While those regulations haven’t forced the city’s hand yet, purchasing new bleachers a couple at a time can help to replace current bleachers before the city is forced into doing so.

The second grant was for the code enforcement department, requesting $10,000 for use with city residents who do not have the means to make repairs to property. The city currently either pays for litigation to force the party to pay to clean up or repair affected property or pays for a crew to do the work. This would cover some of those costs.

The Huron Police Department was approved to begin the process of returning Federal 1033 property currently on load to the department. Police Chief Derek Layher reported that a quote was obtained to ship the large armored vehicle that could be the most difficult to move, however, another agency in the country could have interest in the vehicle, and in that case, the other entity would pay for transport.

After extensive discussion on billboard advertising for the city, a motion was made to direct city advertising dollars already budgeted to the Huron Chamber for billboard advertising but not to enter in as a partner on a contract for the billboard with the Chamber or Greater Huron Development.

Commissioners also:
• Approved appointment of election workers for April 8 election.

• Approved raffle permit for Huron Elks Lodge #444, 460 Dakota Ave. S.
• Approved special on-sale alcohol beverage license filed by 21st Street Casino for Fishing and Families benefit on April 11, at Auto Body Clinic, 670 21st St. SW.
• Accepted the voluntary resignation of Police Officer Sarah Rogers, effective March 8.
• Approved posting and advertising for a police officer position.
• Approved a new contract with Santel Communications for services at the new Solid Waste Transfer Station.
