Area teams compete at state cheer and dance

SIOUX FALLS — Sioux Falls Jefferson won its first ever Class AA Competitive Cheer State Championship, and Brandon Valley won its second straight Competitive Dance title at the AA level Saturday at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
This followed up the Class A championships on Friday night competitions, that saw Dakota Valley notch its 14th consecutive state Competitive Dance championship and Sioux Valley earn its 17th straight state Competitive Cheer title.

Teams from the Heartland had a great showing as well, as Wolsey-Wessington’s cheer squad earned 207 points to finish a half-point behind Deubrook Area in the Small Cheer division. The Warbirds’ score also placed them 6th in Class A Cheer for the season.
Iroquois/Lake Preston finished 17th in the Small Cheer category, led by Claudia Campbell, who earned All-State recognition for the Sharks.
Another highlight on the Saturday was Huron’s Kiara Feild earning All-State recognition.
Sioux Valley ended the Cheer competition with 249 points, 13 better than Tea Area, while Winner Area was third with 221 points.In Competitive Dance, Dakota Valley rolled up 286 points en route to the title, with Tea Area earning its second second-place finish. Dakota Valley won both the Jazz and Pom portions of the competition, and Tea Area was the Hip Hop champion of Class A.
In Class AA, Jefferson won its Cheer title with 288 points, edging O’Gorman by six points. Harrisburg was third with 279.5 points. The Huron Tigers finished 16th in the Cheer field.
Brandon Valley’s Dance title was a close one, as the Lynx amassed 296 points, while Sioux Falls Washington finished second with 292.75. Yankton finished third and Huron was 16th.Washington won Hip Hop, followed by Harrisburg, while Brandon Valley claimed both the Jazz and Pom championships.Huron finished 14th in Hip Hop and 5th in Jazz in Saturday’s competition.
