HURON –– The Huron City Commission completed a canvass of the 2025 municipal election on Monday evening. Finance director Paullyn Carey reported that 858 total votes were cast, representing eleven percent of eligible voters. Rhonda Kludt received 477 votes and Drew Weinreis received 381.

The commission approved the canvass unanimously, with Commissioner Weinreiss abstaining from the vote.

Commissioner Shawn Harvey informed the public that work on the Third Street bridge had to be delayed due to mechanical issues from last week and will now take place this Thursday, April 17.

Mayor Mark Robish read a proclamation recognizing National Public Safety Telecommunicators week, April 14-20. He presented a signed proclamation to telecommunicator Candice Daher, representing the department.

Assistant city engineer Dennis Bennett presented a request to rebid for the 2025 asphalt emulsion with a bid opening of May 6. A procedural error led to no bids received by the city, so the rebid was approved by the commission.

Bennett also presented a change order increase of $77,000 to TLC Olson Construction for lift station improvements as two brick manholes and wet wells were added to the original contract. This was approved.

Brenda Jager, Event Center Manager, discussed with the commission a change in beverage service options in the ballroom. Jager stated that premix units will no longer be carried by Coca-Cola, requiring a change in how soda is offered in the ballroom.

The option to purchase viable mobile bars priced at $15,000 apiece, with potentially six such bars needed for the two ballrooms at the Event Center. After doing some legwork, Jager recommended the installation of water lines to feed the two ballrooms and the lobby area that would be able to feed the existing bars. The cost was $6,865. This was approved.

Commissioners also:
• Accepted the voluntary retirement of fire chief Ron Hines, effective April 25.

• Approved full-time status to 911 telecommunicator Jennah Waldner.
• Approved full-time status to police officer Trevion Smith, effective April 8.
• Approved seasonal hires for Broadland Pro Shop and Parks & Recreation.

Commissioners adjourned the public meeting and moved into an executive session regarding personnel.
