HURON –– The Beadle County Commission met with Jenny Hammrich, the Third Circuit Court administrator, to discuss the space needs for Huron-based Third Circuit staff members, currently housed in the offices at the Beadle County Jail.
To assist with staffing and client needs for accessibility, a move to the courthouse was proposed, utilizing potential open space within the building. Commissioners and Hammrich discussed a number of potential options, including funding for any renovations that would potentially be needed. In the end, a two-member committee of Commissioners Denis Drake and Jared Zerfoss was formed to review available spaces.
Drake and Zerfoss will evaluate spaces in the courthouse for viability and will then connect with Hammrich to move further, with expectation to have an answer by the next meeting on Feb. 11.
The commission opened the meeting hearing from highway superintendent Jason Fritzsche. The commission approved the bridge inspection resolution for 2025. Fritzsche stated that 52 inspections are planned this year.
No changes will be made to the 2024 load limit resolution, and commissioners renewed it for 2025. Fritzsche explained that load limits can be enforced from Feb. 15 to April 30.
Finally, the commission approved a $10,800 payment for Graves Construction as part of work on structure 03-047-280 in Burr Oak Township.
The commission also approved Maya Bridge Language Service for interpretation services as a last resort. A tax abatement of assessment free for 2025 taxes was approved, and Kaboomers Fireworks’ conditional use permit for a fireworks stand was approved.
The commission approved a new hire in the jail, seasonal hires for Dakotaland Museum, and posting for seasonal hires for the weed board.
The commission also approved two plats and the employee listing and salaries for 2025.
The next county commission meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse. The annual towns and townships meeting is set for that evening at 7 p.m. at the Highway Department building on Highway 14.
