County approves surfacing and micro-surfacing bids

HURON –– The Beadle County Commission approved bids for the surfacing and micro-surfacing plans for the county in 2025 at Tuesday morning’s meeting.

Highway superintendent Jason Fritzsche presented the two bids to the commission. The surfacing bid was awarded to Asphalt Paving and Materials Co. for $952,832.71 for the original plan for six miles of Ninth St. Fritzsche stated that with the rate notably below the budget he had, he intended to add one mile to the plans at the rate quoted in order to reach a county road at the end of the work.

ASTECH Corp. of St. Cloud, Minn., won the bid for the micro-surfacing job at $732,747.73 for the 12.9 miles planned in the county this year.

Fritzsche also presented a resolution to remove structure 03-014-270 from the national bridge registry after work done recently that converted the bridge to culverts. The commission approved this and also approved the

Finally, the commission reviewed that load limits have been enacted in the county at six tons per axle, and all roads will be posted with a 40-mile-per-hour limit for truck travel.

Judy Rodacker discussed her new hire in the register of deeds office. The hire was approved contingent upon the employee completing pre-employment screening.

The commission held the second reading of the FEMA ordinance with no objections.

A conditional use permit for Tyler McDonald, 20548 407th Ave. in Custer Township, was approved to create commercial storage units for rent.

The commission approved sheriff contracts with outlying counties to utilize the Beadle County jail at the rate of $105 per prisoner per day.

The commission will next meet on March 11, and the state of the county luncheon is March 13 at the Huron Event Center at noon.
