County meets with department heads

Posted

HURON –– The Beadle County Commission met with the department heads of the county during the course of Tuesday’s meeting, talking about plans for the next year’s budget and also future needs for departments to begin the process of planning out a budget earlier, allowing time to understand budgetary needs for the upcoming year.

The commission approved a contract for micro-surfacing and then discussed future plans with highway superintendent Jason Fritzsche.

The commission then met as the board of adjustment to approve a variance request in the town of Wolsey. The commission also approved three plats.

Commissioners approved the extension of the 10-year agreement with East River Electric.

The longest portion of the meeting came as the commission acted as the county board of equalization to approve property tax exemptions, freeze assessments, and flooded land requests.

They also heard three appeals, one in person, on 2025 taxes. The longest of which was a property in Wolsey that led to a compromise between the assessed value and the proposed value of the homeowner that was approved by the commission. They chose to table discretionary listings to the April 29 meeting, when they would also hear one more appeal.

A promotion in the equalization office for Kristi Rathjen to move to the title of senior appraiser was approved.

The commission will meet next on Tuesday, April 29.
