County officially closes 2024 and opens 2025 business

Posted

HURON –– The Beadle County Commission executed reviewed and approved the minutes of the Dec. 31, 2024, meeting and then declared sine die to close the end of the 2024 year for the county and open the 2025 business year. The first act after that declaration was to swear in the two commissioners whose spot was up for election in 2024, returning commissioner Doug Ramsell and newly-elected commissioner Jared Zerfoss.

The commissioners then made nominations for chair and vice chair. A unanimous ballot was cast for Ramsell as the chair and for Denis Drake as the vice-chair.

Committee and oversight assignments were also laid out, with Zerfoss taking on most of the assignments that his predecessor, Rick Benson, had as a commissioner.

The commission then considered the culvert bids. Having received just one from True North Steel, they accepted that bid.

Commissioners approved a letter of support for Community Counseling Services as the organization applies for opioid settlement grant funding.

The commission then worked with auditor Jill Hanson to review general policies for the county. Some changes were noted, though the commission expressed a desire to speak with the State’s Attorney before making changes in order to have proper legal wording. Ramsell also stated a desire to have department heads for the county review the policies and make suggestions for any changes they would like to see.

The next county commission meeting is set for Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 9 a.m. in the commission room on the second floor of the courthouse.
