HURON — After a number of bids were defaulted last year due to significant changes in product costs, the process will likely change, according to Beadle County Highway Superintendent Merl Hanson, but bids will be taken for 2022. The Beadle County commission agreed Tuesday morning and set Jan. 11 at 9:30 a.m. as the bid opening time.
Hanson opened Tuesday’s commission meeting with reports from the highway department, including news that steel for the new building was to be going up beginning next week. He also showed commissioners a skid steer drum mulcher that the department had demo’d recently. The department was able to purchase the demo model with a safety door and extra set of teeth for $26,600. Commissioners approved this purchase.
Commissioners also approved a variance request by Bill Bartholomew and Deborah Busch in the joint jurisdictional area to allow material storage in an area zoned for residential use as well as approving two plats presented by Beadle County Director of Equalization, Kim Eichstadt.
Commissioners discussed a TIF that had been created originally when Dakota Provisions came to the area. One TIF was known and has been paid all along, and it will be paid off this year, however, a second TIF has been brought to the attention of the auditor. Commissioners could not find evidence of this TIF funded by the commission and associated with a project, but State’s Attorney Mike Moore will do further investigation and discuss at the Dec. 14 meeting.
Commissioners held a long discussion on the museum director position and tabled further discussion on museums in the county to a future meeting.
Commissioners also:
• Approved an extension and expansion of the county’s involvement in the SAKI grant.
• Released the poor lien #12556 tied to property address 1480 Lincoln Ave. S.W.
The next county commission meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 9 a.m.
