De Smet rolls past Raiders in 9B


DE SMET - The De Smet Bulldogs scored right out of the gate and never let up, coming away with a 42-0 victory over the Gayville-Volin Raiders Thursday in De Smet in Class 9B quarterfinal action.

The De Smet Bulldogs struck quickly. Kadyn Fast ran for six yards on the first play of the game, then took a swing pass from quarterback Britt Carlson and ran 74 yards to the end zone.

Melville Deloye kicked the extra point to give the Bulldogs a quick 7-0 lead.

Gayville-Volin put together a time-consuming drive that didn’t really end up gaining up to the De Smet side of the field due to a horsecollar tackle penalty against the Bulldogs. However, the Raiders only went backward from there.

The Britt Carlson show on defense did the job, getting two sacks and then blocking Gayville-Volin’s punt to get the ball back on the Raider 32.

Fast sprinted around end for 20 yards on the first play of the drive, followed by a six-yard run by Ganon Henrich through the teeth of the defense. A holding penalty put the Bulldogs back on the 16, where Carlson connected with Trace Van Regenmorter for a wide-open touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0.

Receiver Hunter Wuebben took an end around for 35 yards on the first play for the Raiders, and quarterback Spencer Karstens completed three consecutive passes and ran for an 8-yard scramble to get the ball to the De Smet 28, but De Smet was able to hold there, getting a turnover on downs.

Carlson was intercepted on the second play of the ensuing drive, and the Raiders put together a strong drive on the bulky legs of Karstens taking multiple quarterback keepers down the field, eventually getting to the Bulldog 10-yard-line as the first quarter ended with the Bulldogs up 14-0.

Karstens then was sacked and threw a pair of incompletions to turn the ball over on downs.
Henrich broke free on the second play of the drive for an 80-yard touchdown run. The kick made it 21-0 Bulldogs.

After a punt put them on their own 23, the Bulldogs used a pass from Carlson to Henrich to get across midfield then Fast ran for 20 yards. Fast ran again to get down to the Raider 20, where Carlson hit Tom Aughenbaugh for a 20-yard touchdown. The point-after made it 28-0, where it would sit at half.

Grant Wilkinson got a finger on a punt at the end of Gayville-Volin’s first possession of the second half, giving the Bulldogs excellent field position, but they stalled, turning the ball over on downs.

The Bulldog defense sent the Raiders backward before receiving a punt on the Gayville-Volin 34. After a procedure penalty moved the ball back five yards, Henrich took the ball straight up the middle for 39 yards and a touchdown. The extra point made it 35-0.

The Raiders started on their own 23 and worked through the end of the third quarter on a drive highlighted by a 16-yard scamper by running back Will Fairley. However, the De Smet defense locked down at midfield, leading to a turnover on downs.

Henrich took the ball three times to get all the way to the Raider 16. After two runs netted no gain, Carlson connected again with Aughenbaugh for a 16-yard score. Deloye’s kick made it 42-0, and the game would end at that score.

The Bulldogs move to 8-2 behind 174 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries by Ganon Henrich. He also caught two balls for 29 yards. Britt Carlson was 6 of 9 throwing the football with 155 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception. Carlson also had three of De Smet’s six sacks.

Three Bulldog receivers grabbed touchdowns. Tom Aughenbaugh grabbed two passes for 36 yards and two scores. Kadyn Fast caught a 74-yard score and also ran for 54 yards on five carries. Trace Van Regenmorter caught one ball for a 16-yard score.

The Raiders finish the year 3-7. Spencer Karstens was 11 of 19 passing for 59 yards and also gained 26 yards on 16 carries.

Will Fairley ran 10 times for 39 yards. Hunter Wuebben had 24 yards on six carries for the Raiders and also grabbed five catches for 23 yards.

The Bulldogs travel to top-seeded Avon Friday for a chance to play for the Class 9B title.
