Dell Rapids unbeaten in Class B tourney

REDFIELD — Dell Rapids won the battle between the two remaining undefeated teams in the 2023 South Dakota American Legion State Class B Senior Baseball Tournament on Sunday.

After scoring three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead, Post 65 added five runs in the fourth inning and held on for an 8-5 win against Redfield.

Brayden Pankonen had two of the seven hits in the game for Dell Rapids. He also had a pair of RBIs, along with CJ Smith.

Tad Tjaden limited Redfield to just three hits, allowing five runs with seven strikeouts and three walks to earn the win for Post 65. Pankonen pitched the final 1 2/3, giving up just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Peyton Osborn had a pair of hits, including a double, for Redfield, which managed just four total in the game.

Nolan Gall started on the mound for Post 92 and went 4 1/3 innings. He allowed eight runs, five of them earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Ellijah Morrissette pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, limiting Dell Rapids to just two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Dell Rapids advanced to face Tabor in the second of two games on Monday, with the winner playing Elk Point-Jefferson or Redfield at 1p.m., today.

Elk Point/Jefferson 5, S/M/C 3

After scoring three runs in the first inning, Elk Point/Jefferson needed a pair of runs in the fifth inning to get past Salem/Montrose/Canova in an elimination game on Sunday.

Keaton Gale had three of the nine hits in the game for Post 134 in the win. Ben Swatek had a double, while Kayden Moore had a pair of RBIs.

Tayson Swatek handled the pitching duties for Elk Point/Jefferson, going six innings. He allow all three runs on five hits with a strikeout and five walks.

Ben Swatek pitched the final inning in relief, holding Post 140 hitless with a pair of strikeouts.

Jack Neises highlighted the offensive effort for Salem/Montrose/Canova with a pair of doubles. Weston Remmers also had a double and drove in a pair of runs.

Braeden Kerkhove went 4 1/3 innings on the mound for Post 140, allowing five runs on seven hits with a strikeout and four walks. Griffin Clubb tossed the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and recording four strikeouts.

Elk Point/Jefferson advanced to face Redfield in an elimination game Monday afternoon.

Tabor 13, Clark/Willow Lake 1

Tabor kept its state title hopes alive with a 13-1 victory in five innings against Clark/Willow Lake in an elimination game on Sunday.

Landon Schmidt started on the mound and three four scoreless inning for the Bluebirds. He allowed just one hit, while striking out seven and walking just two.

Jace Toupal closed the game with an inning of work, where he allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout and two walks.

Brady Bierema led Tabor offensively, with three hits. Riley Rothschadl, Landon Bares and Jackson Caba each had a pair of hits, with Bares’ effort including a triple.

Bares, Toupal and Caba also had two RBIs each.

Trey Huber and Jakob Steen each had a hit for Clark/Willow Lake.

Dawson Lanten started on the mound but lasted just 1 1/3 innings for Post 60. He gave up nine runs on six hits with four walks.

Cooper Pommer went the final 3 2/3 innings for Clark/Willow Lake, allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Tabor advanced to face undefeated Dell Rapids in the second of two games on Monday.
