HURON — Dorothy Dubs, age 83 of Huron, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Her memorial service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron. Her service will be livestreamed.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, with a prayer service to begin at 6 p.m., at Kuhler Funeral Home. Her prayer service is also being livestreamed. Visitation is also one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Dorothy Mae Parkin was born October 23, 1940, in Minot, N.D., to Glenn and Marie (Petry) Parkin. Dorothy resided with her family in Carpio, N.D., until she was five, when the family relocated to Claremont. She graduated from Claremont High School and earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northern State University.

Dorothy married Bobby Dubs in Claremont on June 22, 1963. As a couple, they lived in Bowdle, where they welcomed a daughter, Rhonda and a son, Kevin. As a family, they also lived in Groton and Huron.

She was a lifelong learner and educator. Her career, which she was passionate about, was elementary education, focusing on special education. She was the 1985 South Dakota Teacher of the Year and retired in 1998. Dorothy was an active, longtime member of the Riverview United Methodist Church. A member of the South Dakota Education Association and National Education Association, a 50+ year member of PEO and the Belles and Beaus Square Dance Club.

Dorothy had many interests and talents, including the keen ability to make and maintain many long-term, life-long friendships. She particularly enjoyed volunteering, reading, listening to music, quilting, walking, attending rummage and garage sales, coffee and tea parties, and creative projects of any kind.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda; her granddaughter Abby; her grandson, Brady; her sister, Virginia (LaVerne) Swanson; her daughter-in-law, Sheila; her special nephew and nieces, Kirk (Janelle) Swanson, Veronica (Dick) Paulson and Vanessa (Tom) Albrecht; her brothers-in-law, Eldon (Maurine) Wollmann and Ron Dubs; her sister-in-law, Kathy Dubs; her stepbrother-in-law, Larry (Susan) Lekness; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby; her son, Kevin; her brother, Dr. James (Jim) Parkin; her parents-in-law, Alfred and Elsie Dubs; her sister-in-law, Shirley (Dubs) Wollmann; her brother-in-law, Roger Dubs; and her stepfather-in-law, Elmer Lekness.
