HURON — A Sioux Falls company has been hired to perform an in-depth inspection of the Huron Event Center parking ramp at the recommendation of city engineers.
The ramp, constructed in 1986, has seen limited repairs and attention, said City Engineer Brett Runge.
Cost of the inspection by Infrastructure Design Group Inc. will not exceed $6,500. The report will include itemization of costs and prioritization of necessary repairs.
“The structure is currently experiencing some settlement concerns along with concrete deterioration that have warranted the need for an in-depth inspection,” Runge said.
A prioritized maintenance plan with itemized costs to properly budget and plan for repairs for the next five years is needed, he said.
Inspectors from the company have been on the site already and said the first step should be sealing the upper level of the ramp so it no longer leaks water to the lower level, causing corrosion. That could cost about $200,000.
Runge said the company may also be asked to estimate the cost of demolishing and replacing the parking ramp, although he added that would be substantial.
An inspection of the parking ramp was budgeted for 2017, but was never completed. The $6,500 fee is not included in the 2018 budget so it will have to be paid for through contingency funds.
