Gross, area wrestlers reach state finals

SIOUX FALLS — After two days of competition, all that remains for the surviving wrestlers in Class A and B today, is to determine final the final placings in all weight classes.

While there are individual titles still to be decided, team scores are still up in the air as well.

Teams

Entering the final round today, Sturgis leads the Class A standings with 180 points, while Pierre has 155. Huron sits in 18th place with 26 points.

Class B team standings find Canton leading the pack with a slim 146-138.5 lead over Phillip/Kadoka Area/Wall. Custer sits in third with 105, three points ahead of Winner Area.

Heartland teams in the mix include Miller/Highmore-Harrold in seventh with 71 points, while Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington holds down 11th place with 53 points.

Kingsbury County has 41 points, good for 16th, while Clark/Willow Lake is in 20th with 31 points.

Individuals

In Class A, the only Huron Tiger remaining in the hunt for a placing is 150 pounder Moses Gross. Gross will take on Joseph Nadig of Sturgis today for the title, after Nadig upset second-seeded Ayden Dooley of S.F. Jefferson 1-0.

Tonight’s title match will be the third championship match for Gross, who won the 132 pound title in 2022 over Trason Oehme of Brandon Valley, but dropping the 145 pound title to Oehme last year. Nadig did not place at last year’s tournament.

Class B

Several Heartland region Class B grapplers remain alive for placing matches as the tournament wraps up today, including three who will have a shot at a state title.

Grady Fey of Redfield, the top seeded 285-pounder in the state, will take on second seeded Traun Cook of Canton for the championship. Fey earned his shot with an 11-2 major decison over Isaac Nehlich of Tri-Valley in the semifinals.

He’ll be joined in the finals by 215-pounder Holden Havlik of Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington, who upset second seeded Caleb Rickenbach of Hot Springs, 4-3, in the semifinals. he will face top seeded Levi Wieman of Parker for the championship at 215 pounds.

At 138 pounds, top-seeded Kellan Hurd from Miller/Highmore-Harrold pinned Connor Giedd from Kingsbury County in two minutes to earn a shot at the title, where he will face No. 2 Haeden Jorgenson of Webster Area for the championship.

Giedd decisioned Gavin Risse of Bennett County 4-2 and will face Karson Keiser of Winner Area for 3rd place at 138.

Other Heartland wrestlers

106 pounds - Madden Odland, Redfield, decisioned Cade Galikowski 1-0, eliminating Galikowski. Odlund then lost to Chase Hurd of Miller/Highmore-Harrold 5-2 and will wrestle Ryvr Larson of Bon Homme/Avon for 7th place, while Hurd will tangle with Tayton Kurkowski of Webster Area for fifth.

113 pounds - Jacksen Carter of WS/W/W-W [inned Jaymin vanDerWerff of M/H-H in 4:48, then decisioned Tyler Trant of Custer to earn a shot at Landon Walker of Canton in the 3rd place match.

Also at 113, C/WL’s Cooper Pommer pinned Caleb Christiansen of Parker in 4:40, then lost a 9-3 decision to Maddux Risse of Bennett County. Pommer will take on Trant for 5th place at 113.

120 pound - WS/W/W-W wrestler Kaydin Carter lost to Kasen Konstanz of Kimball/White Lake/Plankinton in the semifinals, then came back to defeat Tryston Traupel of McCook Central-Montrose in the wrestle backs and will take on Zach Bartels of Canton for 5th place.

Miller/Highmore-Harrold’s 120 pounder Talon Ping pinned Cash Edgar of Faulkton Area in 45 seconds, bhen lost to Traupel by pin, to move into today’s 7th place match versus Easton Tschetter of Marion/Freeman.

126 pounds - Gannon Gilligan of Kingsbury County defeated Jordan Schaefer of M/H-H and will wrestler Wyatt Weintjes of Mobridge/Pollock for 3rd place. Schaefer will take on Cole Hendrixson of Tri-Valley for fifth place, after Hendrickson downed Connor Zens. Zens will wrestler for 7th place at 126 pounds.

144-pounds - Teagen Foreman of M/H-H battled to a 4-3 win over Bryce Hawkinson of Britton-Hecla, then downed Leighton Sander of Custer 5-0, before being forced to retire due to injury against Christian Ehresman of Canton. If able to continue, Foreman will take Teague Granum of Canton for fifth place.

150 pounds - Clark/Willow Lake’s Bryce Klanke lost to Brody Dyborg of Tri-Valley, ending his tournament.

157 pounds - Ryder Rowland of M/H-H decisioned Charlie Dulany of Warner/Northwestern, but dropped a 5-2 decision to Aidan Kranz of Canton to fall into the 7th place match, where he will face Gunner Ewing of Elk Point-Jefferson.

165 pounds - Elliot Bratland of C/WL decisioned Dylan Buseman of Parker, 4-3, before withdrawing due to injury against Ladry Reiser of Tri-Valley. If he is able to continue, he will face Korbin Whiteley for 7th place.

175 pounds - Colby Kolda of M/H-H will take on Dylan Murray of Redfield in the 7th place match at 175. Murray decisioned Drake Mueller of Faulkton Area 54, then lost to Josh Kannegieter of C/WL. Kolda pinned Ethan Hess of Lead-Deadwood in 2:33, but lost to Calvin Halverson of Howard by pin.

Kannegieter earned a spot in the third-place match, where he will face Kolter Kramer.

215 pounds - Conner Johnson of Kingsbury Couty pinned Parker Mathis of Winner Area in 2:01, but lost to Wagner’s Tim Bouza and will wrestle Hunter Richmond of Canton for 7th place.

Action on the final day of wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. with seventh place matches. Other placing matches will take place as well and championship matches for all weight divisions in both Class A and B will begin at 1 p.m.
