Moses Gross is lone Huron wrestler to reach semifinals at state tournament

SIOUX FALLS — Junior Moses Gross was the lone wrestler remaining in the championship hunt for Huron following the opening day of the Class A State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
Gross recorded a pair of pins for the Tigers to reach the semifinals at 150 pounds. As the No. 1 seed, he opened the tournament win a pin at the 3:14 mark of his match against Sterne Pankratz of O’Gorman.
Gross then needed just 1:19 to get past Jackson Tschetter of Tea Area in the quarterfinals.
Gross, who is now 38-1, will face Keaton Vessells of West Central in the semifinals.
Senior Bryan Ramirez at 215 was the only other Huron wrestlers to win a match during the opening round. He recorded a 6-4 decision against Lucas Tonsager of Belle Fourche to reach the quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Zak Juelfs of Sturgis, who was 41-1, pinned Ramirez in 58 seconds to reach the semifinals.
Ramirez will face the winner of a match betwee Rip Siemonsma of O’Gorman and Ethan Wientjes of Watertown in a second round consolation match today.
Alex Oedekoven of Pierre pinned Huron’s Aiden Zavesky in his opening match at 132 at the 4:36 mark.
Zavesky will face Logan Brown of Rapid City Central in the consolation first round today.
Ridley Waldo of Aberdeen Central pinned Lah Doh Soe of Huron in 1:35 during their opening match at 138.
Soe will face Riley Dighton of Belle Fourche in a consolation match today.
Zhoel Irion of Sturgis got past TJ Lien of Huron at the 1:34 mark with a pin in their match at 157 on Thursday.
Lien will face Logan Straub of Brookings in the first round consolation today.
Preston Ray of Sturgis inked a 12-2 major decision against Huron’s Lucas Chaparro to open the tournament at 165.
Chaparro will face Greyson Deelstra of Sioux Falls Lincoln in the a first round consolation match today.
Sturgis amassed 89.5 points to lead in the Class A team standings entering the second day. Pierre was second at 80, followed by Branodn Valley at 57.5, Tea Area at 53 and Aberdeen Central and West Central at 48.
The first and second round consolation matches are slated for 9:30 a.m. Today, with the semifinals at third round consolation matches to begin at 3 p.m.
The placing matches are slated for 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the championship matches at 1 p.m.
