HURON — Helen J. Larson, age 91, of Huron and formerly of Iroquois, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, at Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Iroquois. Visitation with her family present will be on Thursday, March 20, from 5 to 7 pm at Welter Funeral Home in Huron and also one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Friday.
Helen Joyce Nelsen Larson was born on Feb. 9, 1934, to Frederick and Blanche (Fountain) Nelsen in Carpenter. She grew up on the family farm near Carpenter, where she attended Iroquois schools.
On May 24, 1954, Helen married Clarence “Eddie” Larson in Ivanhoe, Minn. Together, they raised a beautiful family, welcoming five children into their lives: Gary, Rick, Lori, Scott and Jodi. The family made their home in the Carpenter and Iroquois areas, where Helen devoted herself to being a loving wife and dedicated mother.
Outside of her family, Helen had a variety of interests. She cherished moments of leisure spent playing cards, solving puzzles, and reading. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Helen and Eddie shared a love for dancing as members of the Fun Steppers Dance Club. After Eddie passed, Helen enjoyed the camaraderie of the Clark Pinochle Club, being a member for many years.
For the last several years, Helen enjoyed getting together and playing cards with the Thursday Afternoon Ladies Card Group.
Helen’s legacy is one of kindness, devotion, and joy, and she will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. After moving to Huron, Sunday family dinners became a tradition for whoever could make it, quite often all five of her children would be sitting around the table with her. Her philosophy was, “if I cook, they will come.” She loved to bake and all the grandchildren knew there were cookies in the freezer.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Gary (Bobbi) Larson of Miller, Rick Larson of Iroquois, Lori Anderson of Huron, Scott Larson of Huron, and Jodi (Duane) Hanson of Huron; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Mary Wienk of De Smet; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eddie in 1989; her parents Fred and Blanch Nelsen; brothers Wendell Nelsen, Bob Nelsen, and Lloyd Nelsen; sisters Betty Wildfang, Carol Nelsen, Vivian Bruns, and Wanda Hart; son-law, Richard Anderson; Eddies’ 11 siblings and their spouses who were very special to Helen.
