HURON –– Herbert P. Scheele, Jr., age 82, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at Huron Regional Medical Center. His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 10, at Welter Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon.
Herb Scheele was born on December 11, 1942, to parents Herbert P. and Carol Ruth (Dunlap) Scheele in Woonsocket. He grew up in Woonsocket and graduated from high school in 1960. Herb attended Huron College before starting his career with the City of Huron Water Department. Herb dedicated 33 years to the city ensuring safe drinking water for all. He was the water treatment plant superintendent for several years before retiring.
Herb married Elaine Bergman on November 6, 1986, at American Lutheran Church in Huron. Herb loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing rounds of golf. He and Elaine enjoyed bowling leagues for many years. If he couldn’t be outside, Herb cheered for Kansas Jayhawks basketball and the Chicago Bulls. He also enjoyed watching the Little League World Series.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Huron; children, Blaine (Amanda) Erickson of Omaha, Neb., Kelly (Tammy) Erickson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Victoria (Greg) Pitezle of Redondo Beach, Calif.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Melissa (Steve) Eggan of Beresford and Carolyn (Snooky) Sims of Haysville, NC; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Gerald, Morse and Scott Bergman; step-daughter Starley Dawn Bern and infant step-son Mark Andrew Erickson.
