HURON — Kim Puterbaugh Herrmann, a 1990 HHS grad was a five-year letterwinner in Cross-Country and Track and Field for the Tigers. She was one of South Dakota’s dominant distance runners during her years at HHS.  

Kim led Tiger Girls Cross-Country teams to State Championships in 1987 and 1989 and a runner-up finish in 1988. She led the Tiger Girls to the ESD Cross-Country Championships in 1987, 1988, and 1989. Individually, Kim finished 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in the State Cross-Country meet. Individually, she was ESD runner-up 3 consecutive years.  Kim was voted MVP for the Tigers 3 straight years.  

In 1987, Kim helped lead the Tigers to a runner-up finish at the ESD Conference Track Meet and then a fourth place at the State Track Meet by anchoring the Medley Relay to a runner-up finish. Huron girls won the ESD Track meet in 1988 and captured third place at the State Track Meet with Kim placing in her distance races. In 1989, Kim won the 800 meter run at the ESD meet as the Tiger girls were ESD runner-ups. In 1990, her senior track season, she placed high in three distance races to lead the Tigers to a top-five finish at the State Track Meet.

Kim was an extremely hard worker who ran all year round, putting in many miles to get ready for her cross-country and track seasons. She was a great leader to her teammates in that she could always inspire them to do their very best in practice and meets. She always pushed herself to be the best that she could be in her sports and in her academics.  

Kim is a graduate of South Dakota State University and received her Physicians Assistant Degree from the University of South Dakota. She is currently the CEO of the Wapiti Medical Group.

Kim is married to Stan Herrmann and they have 3 children, Tanse Herrmann, Trayce Haeder Herrmann, and Tayne Herrmann. Tanse and his wife, Tonya, have 2 children, Tully and Tayzi. Kim is the daughter of Gerald and Ann Puterbaugh who farm outside of Cavour.

Josh Trandall
Josh Trandall, 1990 HHS grad, was one of South Dakota’s great track sprinters. He had a tremendous track career at HHS and at Northern State University.

While at HHS, he competed in football and track. During his senior year he was an All-ESD Conference selection in football. Josh was a three-year letter winner in track and field and helped lead the Tigers to ESD Conference track championships in 1988 and 1989 and a runner-up finish in 1990. During his track career he placed 10 times in individual and relay events at the ESD annual ESD Conference track meet. As a junior, Josh took second place in the 400 meter dash and helped the Tigers place in relays.

As a senior, Josh put on a show that rarely happens. He won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes at the State Track Meet and led the Tiger 400-meter relay to a state championship. The Tigers finished in a close second in the 800-meter relay at the State Track Meet  after being undefeated all track season. Josh’s performances led the Tigers to a third place finish at the State Track Meet.

Josh was recruited to run track at Northern State University where he would compete in four indoor national and four outdoor national track meets. He was an 18-time Northern Sun Conference Track champion and would be inducted into the Northern State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. 

In the summer of 1992, Josh ran track in Europe as part of the World Sports Exchange program. He was a NCAA Division II national place winner and an All-American in 1992 and 1993. In 1995, he was named the Most Valuable Track Athlete for the Northern Sun Conference. He still holds many of Northern’s track records. Josh would graduate from Northern with a degree in Spanish and physical education and receive his master’s degree in physical education.

While teaching and coaching in Canton, Josh met Marianne Palleria and they were married in the summer of 1999. Just after the wedding they moved to Micronesia to teach for 2 years. They also taught in Paraguay before coming back to teach in the Huron Public Schools. Josh taught Spanish and Marianne taught English. They would lead 5 student tours to Peru, Costa Rica, and Spain so students could explore other cultures. 

During this time at HHS, Josh coached the sprinters for the HHS track team and was loved by the athletes he coached. In 2018, Josh took a position with Northern State University teaching high school Spanish in a distance learning environment where he was able to reach students in smaller schools around South Dakota. Josh continued to work with Tiger sprinters on a volunteer basis to give back to the program that he loved so much.  

In the summer of 2022 Josh was diagnosed with ALS. The disease progressed quickly and after a very courageous battle he passed away on February 12, 2023.  

Josh was so grateful for having shared his life with Marianne and his children, Jackson and Abigail and all his family and friends. Josh was also survived by his sister Callie and his parents, Jeff and Helen Trandall of Huron and his wife’s parents, Frank and Christine Palleria of Huron.

Josh was a man with such a big heart for all and he cared so much about family, friends, and his students. He was also so happy and positive and was such an inspiration to all he came in contact with.
