HHS debaters place in Sioux Falls tournament

Posted

The Huron High School Speech & Debate Team traveled to Sioux Falls for the Sioux Falls Invitational Tournament on Nov. 10-11.

The speech events were held at SF Washington on Friday and the debate events at SF Roosevelt on Saturday.

Top finishers from Huron include:
• In Novice Dramatic Interp, Isabella Shafer placed fourth.

• In Readers Theater, the team of Lily Halter, Tessa Gogolin, Antony Sorto, and Cameron Cutshaw placed fourth.
• In Varsity Humorous Interp, Tessa Gogolin placed seventh and Cameron Cutshaw placed eighth.
• In Varsity LD Debate, Mackenzie Copeland went 3-2 and placed 14th.

“Again, we had some success in our interp events,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “We’ve been getting people on the awards stage a good deal so far this season. This is important as we get ready to attend the S.D. State Interp Tournament right after Thanksgiving in December.

“This was our first weekend out with debaters,” he added. “We took two Varsity LDers that debated a resolution about banning fossil fuel extraction on U.S. federal lands. I’m pleased that both Mackenzie and Gracie Warren were able to pick up wins their first weekend out this season. The team looks to get our Public Forum debaters out at our next tournament in Mitchell.”

The next tournament for the HHS Speech & Debate Team will be the Mitchell McGovern Tournament on Nov. 17-18. Then the State Oral Interp Tournament will be held following the Thanksgiving break.
