HURON — The HHS Speech & Debate Team traveled to Yankton for the Lewis & Clark Tournament on Jan. 26-27.
“The team had a strong tournament in Yankton,” said head coach Mitch Gaffer. “We advanced many people to the final rounds, where they performed well, and place high. Huron was on the awards stage quite a bit!”
Top finishers from Huron:
• In Duet Interp, the team of Green Ta Bah & Antony Sorto placed first, Samantha Swanson & Mylie Byrd placed second, and Lily Halter & Tessa Gogolin placed third.
• In Humorous Interp, Cameron Cutshaw placed first, Tessa Gogolin placed second, Khunnasphat Muepae placed fifth, and Kara Gabriel placed seventh.
Congress Debate award winners from Huron are Cameron Cutshaw and Lily Halter.
“Huron was especially strong in the interp events, especially Duet Interp, where they captured the top three finishes, and Humorus Interp, where they won the top two spots,” Gaffer said. “Cameron Cutshaw, Lily Halter, and Tessa Gogolin all had a great tournament by placing in multiple events.
“As coaches, this kind of performance tells us that we are on track to our goal of qualifying to the National Speech & Debate Tournament. The qualifying tournament will be held at Harrisburg High School on Feb. 16-17.”
The next tournament for the Speech & Debate Team is the Sioux Falls Jefferson Tournament on Feb. 2-3.
